With all of the conflict in the world today, it may be a good time for all of us to take just 2 minutes out of our busy day to learn a little something about true communication ... and to laugh really hard!
"It's Not About the Nail" is an oldie, but a goodie! Its hilarity lies in the fact that it is so true. What is needed in our discourse today is not more facts, not a clear determination of who is right and who is wrong - but rather the willingness to hear the other and empathize.
As Marshall Rosenberg, author of "Nonviolent Communication" and global conflict mediator, instructs repeatedly and emphatically throughout his work, conflict resolution hinges on each party's sense that s/he has been heard and respected. Intractable issues often dissolve and resolve quickly when people feel that their perspectives have been received and considered.
