Give To All Americans This Giving Season

November 27, 2018

Giving Tuesday begins the season of giving, when many of us make our end of the year charitable donations.  As always, there are many worthy causes that deserve our donations.  But this year, there is a cause that you may not have considered in the past which is desperately in need of your attention and your support: the health of our Country and our Democracy.

It is no secret that our country is ailing at the moment.  Regardless of our political beliefs or affiliations, we can all recognize that there is a decline in the health of our civil discourse, and many Americans are suffering from the rancor and divisiveness that has afflicted both our political and social interactions.

When a friend or loved one is ill and in need of life-saving support, community members will rally together to raise the requisite funds to assure s/he receives the attention and care s/he needs.  But how can one contribute to the care of our country as a whole?

Fortunately, there are a variety of wonderful organizations that are working tirelessly to heal the wounds and mend the tears that are threatening the fabric of our democracy.  For all of those who love our country, who have benefitted from its freedoms and opportunities and who value the ideals of equality and liberty on which America stands, it would be worthwhile at this giving season to consider supporting one of these organizations that are providing the tools to bring us back together and to restore our national health and integrity:

AllSides - Unlike regular news services, AllSides exposes bias and provides multiple angles on the same story so you can quickly get the full picture, not just one slant.

Better Angels - a national citizens' movement to reduce political polarization in the United States by bringing liberals and conservatives together to understand each other beyond stereotypes, forming red/blue community alliances, teaching practical skills for communicating across political differences, and making a strong public argument for depolarization.

Bridge Alliance - a diverse coalition of more than 80 respected established organizations committed to revitalizing democratic practice in America.

Heterodox Academy - a politically diverse group of more than 1,800 professors and graduate students who have come together to improve the quality of research and education in universities by increasing viewpoint diversity, mutual understanding, and constructive disagreement.

National Institute for Civil Discourse - integrates research, practice and policy to support and engage elected officials who are capable of working to solve the big issues facing our country, a public that demands civil discourse as well as government that works in the best interests of the country as a whole, and a media that informs citizens in a fair and responsible way.

Serve 2 Unite - fosters student leaders who build inclusive, compassionate, nonviolent climates in their schools and surrounding communities. We do this by introducing students to global mentors who inspire them to create service-learning projects and share their work with the world through the arts.
